(Sector expects the merger announcement between certification programs next Brazilian Cotton Congress in September)
Starting next month, the certification program Brazilian Cotton Head (ABR), created by the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Abrapa) that ensures product traceability from the field to the industry while respecting the environmental, social and economic world, will merged with BCI (Better Cotton Initiative), which provides international certification improving global agricultural commodity production. Entities involved in the process should formalize the merger of national and international programs during the 9th Brazilian Congress of Cotton, between 3 and 6 September in Brasilia.
"We have come so far, walking with these two programs (ABR and BCI), which have completely different protocols. In September, we hope to communicate to the world that all cotton ABR is recognized by BCI and, with that, let's get put on the market a significant amount of certified cotton, "said executive director Abrapa Marcio Portocarrero.
According to him, Brazil currently has 684,000 tons of lint certified by BCI, the largest global supplier of the product. "The sum of all the other countries do not reach 30% of what we've produced. And the time we add the program to the ABR BCI, we will, of course, the world's largest supplier of certified cotton long" highlights.
The BCI system began to be implemented on farms in Mato Grosso and three other Brazilian states in 2010/2011 season. This season, the number of properties that have joined the program reached 44 and 255 farms were certified by the ABR program. When the ABR program is recognized by BCI system, all farms that obtain the certification ABR crop in 2013/2014 will receive the license to sell BCI.
"Today, the market out there to pay a little more for certified cotton, but what they say is that, in the near future, who will lose is who has the certified cotton. Access to good industries is through the BCI . And this fusion of ABR with BCI is a leap very important to Brazilian cotton in terms of recognition of sustainability, "says Portocarrero.
According to Milton Garbugio, president of the Mato Grosso Cotton Growers (AMPA), consumer awareness regarding good manufacturing practices leads the industry to require certified raw material. "The way the industry worldwide is put on your labels, so that the consumer will become increasingly demanding, 20%, 30% that shirt was made of cotton charge. This is a great marketing move them and that leads us to follow this path, "he says.
