Genetic material of breeds at risk of extinction will be maintained

Breeds of sheep and goats from the Brazilian semiarid region that are threatened with extinction due to drought in the region have the genetic material conserved. An agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Science Center, Federal University of Alagoas (Ceca - Ufal) want to work in the conservation and improvement of the breeds of goats and Slutty Moxotó and sheep breeds Rabo Largo and Cara Short.

"There are several reasons for the unrestricted defense initiatives conservation of genetic resources. It is our duty to devote efforts to the races originated in the region to keep up preserved, not only for a possible future use, but mainly for use associated with sustainability, "said Secretary of Agriculture and Cooperatives Development Map, Caio Rocha.

According to Rock, due to the lack of special measures for the sustainable use and conservation, providing adequate support to farmers, the native breeds are being replaced. "For the sake of future generations, plant and animal genetic resources should be considered as one of the greatest historical heritage, cultural and environmental conditions in the Northeast," he said.
