The concept of sustainable development is a concept that encompasses several areas, becoming essentially a balance between economic growth, social equity and environmental protection.

The Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, adds a new focus on social issues, stating that "... cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature" becomes "the roots of development understood not only in terms of growth economic but also as a means to achieve a more satisfactory intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual. " In this vision, cultural diversity is the fourth policy area of sustainable development.

The concept includes notions of weak sustainability, sustainability and deep ecology. Different conceptions also reveal a strong tension between ecocentrism and anthropocentrism. The concept remains poorly defined and contains a lot of debates about its definition.
During the last ten years, several organizations have attempted to measure and monitor the proximity to what they consider sustainability by implementing what has been called sustainability metrics and indicators.
Sustainable development is said to set limits for the developing world. While current first world countries polluted significantly during their development, the same countries encourage third world countries to reduce pollution, which sometimes impedes growth. Some consider that the implementation of sustainable development implies a return to the lifestyles of pre-modern.
