Recognized as the greatest geneticist coffee in the world , the Brazilian Alcides Carvalho complement this Friday ( 20/9 ) one hundred years if alive . Carvalho was responsible for 65 coffee cultivars developed at the Agronomic Institute ( IAC ) , Campinas , the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of São Paulo , where he worked for 58 years. These beans currently occupy about 90 % of the Arabica coffee from Brazil .

In 1950 , very early , he initiated studies on rust - two decades before the disease arrived in Brazil . The work involved a partnership with the Research Centre Coffee Rust in Portugal .
Among the many awards he had throughout his career , highlight the title of Doctor " Honoris Causa " of the College of Agriculture " Luis de Queiroz " / USP , granted in 1976 , the National Award for Science and Technology , the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development ( CNPq ) , in 1982 , the title of the Centenary of Agronomy Agronomic Institute in 1987 , the Commander Degree conferred by the president in 1987 , a Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1991, and the recognition and honor of the Government of Costa Rica and the Brazilian coffee growers in 1993 . Carvalho was born in 1913 and died aged 79 in 1993 .
