The Brazilian corn production reached 71.1 million tons in 2012 , an increase of 27.7 % , and exceeded that of soybean ( 65.9 million tons ) , who was the leader since 2002 , before I fall in production 12% by drought in the South and Northeast . The data are part of the research Municipal Agricultural Production ( PAM ) released today ( 25/10 ) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics ( IBGE ) .

The study shows a decline in crop in the United States, the largest producer in the world , as the main stimulus for the increase in Brazilian acreage by 1.5 million hectares ( 10.7% ) and investments in technology.

The greatest growth of this culture was recorded in the Midwest , which has not suffered from the drought . Paraná, the largest rice producer , with 23.3 % share in the national crop production increased by 32.7 % compared to 2011 . Mato Grosso had the highest increase in production, 101.5 % more than the previous year and was the largest producer of second crop corn ( 38.3 million tons ) , which surpassed the first time the first crop ( 32.8 million tons ) .

Despite the expansion of the planted area of 1.1 million hectares , making soybean occupying 25.1 million hectares , 36.3 % of the acreage in the country , the result was not reflected in increased production . According to IBGE, the reason was the lack of regular rainfall in the South, in Mato Grosso do Sul , Bahia and Piaui . However , soy still has the highest output value (24.7% ), followed by cane sugar ( 19.8%) and corn (13.2%) .
