A virtual collection with 420,000 images of plants in high resolution is available for consultation on the website of Brazil Plants : History and Rescue Virtual Herbarium for Knowledge and Conservation of the Brazilian Flora ( Reflora ) . Released yesterday ( 30/9 ) , the Reflora also provides information on species of flora have been studied by scientists and naturalists in the 18th and 19th centuries .

Work is an initiative of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development ( CNPq ) , with implementation of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro ( Botanical Garden ) , in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew , UK , and the Muséum National d' Histoire Naturelle Paris .

The President of the Institute of Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro , Samyra Crespo explains that in addition to facilitating the work of researchers who have unrestricted access to the material , the Reflora also contributes to the cataloging of plants of the country , expected to be completed in 2020 , as required by the Convention on Biological Diversity ( CBD) treaty of the United Nations ( UN) established during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro made in 1992 , the Eco 92 .

" Not only because Reflora is a product of the Botanical Garden with its partners and showing the ability we have today to help Brazil meet its goals and the Convention on Biological Diversity , but he consolidated an institutional identity , which is to be a research institute that wants to be a protagonist in biodiversity conservation and Brazilian international and increasingly fulfill its role of being relevant in the international scientific community . "

The Project Coordinator Reflora , Rafaela Campostrini Forzza explains the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens and the Muséum National d' Histoire Naturelle in Paris were chosen for the first partnerships for having the largest Brazilian collections and also have historical affinity with the Botanical Garden . She says the work began in 2010 with the aim of repatriating samples deposited in European herbaria .

" At the time naturalists passed by Brazil , we had no museums here with the ability to store , then took him to the only place where there were scientists working and cataloging the flora of the New World . Now what we 're doing is repatriating the images of these specimens back to Brazil . "

According to Rafaela , are to be entered into agreements with the herbaria of Vienna , New York and Missouri . The next to be included are those of Brussels and Munich, as well as other catalogs Brazil . "Having the specimens helps us to know what is lacking to describe . For comparison, you need to have at hand all that has been done to find out what is missing . Our studies have shown that Brazil has the highest biodiversity of plants in the world . The Reflora is an important step to catalog them all, but still has plenty of work ahead. "

The Brazilian plant catalog has about 44,000 species and , according to the researcher , it is estimated that go missing between 5000 and 10 000 new species of flowering plants .

The representative of Kew Eimear Nic Lughadha explains that since 1998 , the institution studying ways to make such repatriation . Now , with the partnership finally work has achieved the necessary scale . " First, it is our obligation to increase access to material that we have , we tried to do in various ways on a smaller scale . Now , with Brazil , we are trying to do in a manner most appropriate to the amount of biodiversity that Brazil has , since Brazil has between 10 % and 20 % of the world's biodiversity . "

According to her , the herbarium at Kew has between 250 000 and 400 000 Brazilian samples . "You can not be sure until the end of the year we will have 80 000 ever made , and we have twice as much to do, we will still take three years . The Brazilian material is mixed, the organization is not geographical , is a taxonomic catalog . We have to lift the entire herbarium . "

To Eimear , the experience also helps you update the collection of the institution , as well as serve as a model for other projects sharing the reference material .
