Known nationally as a major producer of tropical fruits , Rio Grande do Norte accounts for more than half of the Brazilian melon , as reports the Sebrae News Agency . The fruits that follow abroad garatem high profitability for producers , but there is a promising market , yet unexplored : that of native species .

Although mangaba , caja, cherimoya, cherry , custard apple (or fruit Earl ) and hog plum umbu have good consumer acceptance , they have not yet entered the production system. Now , researchers are developing varieties to make them an option for fruit farmers business .

The calls are not essentially native fruits and commercial production is restricted to extraction . Therefore , the Agricultural Research Company of Rio Grande do Norte ( EMPARN ) studies of some varieties of these species to increase the percentage of fruit pulps , as caja, and cajarana umbu . One responsible for the research, the Ph.D. in agronomy Amilton War Gurgel , a lecture today ( 18/10 ) on the production of native fruits . " The cultivation of these fruit worth the investment because it is species that have high financial return . Market exists , just explore it , "says the agronomist . According Amilton War , these fruits are enjoyed by agribusinesses producing pulps and juices , and could be grown on a large scale in some regions of the state , which are naturally suited to native species .

The mountainous region , especially the Serra de Santana , is an area suitable for the cultivation of the pine cone , which fits the mood of milder temperatures . The umbu could be an alternative throughout the semi-arid region . But the coastline is suitable for the cultivation of mangaba . To get an idea of the productivity of this fruit characteristic flavor , each plant gets to provide up to 14 pounds of fruit. In an area of one hectare , can grow up to 205 fruit trees . " Even in the stage of domestication , these fruits have commercial value ," says the researcher .
